The electricity mix in Wales

    Region by region

Wales is split between two network regions. North Wales shares its region with Merseyside and Cheshire (SP Energy Networks), and South Wales is covered by National Grid Electricity Distribution. Here's how each one looks right now, cleanest first. Hover over or tap the map to see any region.

When's the cleanest time to use power in Wales?

    Step 1 of 3

See the grid where your business is

Pop in your site's postcode and we'll show you your local grid and the cleanest hours to use power there. Nothing is saved at this step.

    Step 2 of 3

Want a plan for this site?

Tell us who you are and we'll put together when your site should use power, what half-hourly settlement means for your costs, and which contracts suit how you work.

When you press the button we keep your company name, site postcode and what you entered in this tool, and may contact your business about your results and your energy contracts. See our privacy policy for how we handle your data.

    Step 3 of 3

    Let us check your meter

Give us permission and we'll check your meter details and your Estimated Annual Consumption with the industry, so your plan uses your real figures. It's free and there's no obligation.

Meter Information and Data Access Authority

We will use this to obtain your meter, supplier and consumption information so we can provide quotations and arrange utility procurement. This does not place you into a contract, does not commit you to a quote, and there is no fee for obtaining this information. Your authority lasts 12 months unless you tell us to stop sooner.

What this authority allows, and what it doesn't

    It allows us to:

    • Obtain supplier information.
    • Obtain meter information.
    • Obtain consumption information.
    • Contact suppliers regarding this information.

    It does not:

    • Place you into a utility contract.
    • Require you to accept a quotation.
    • Create any fee solely for obtaining this information.

Version MIF-DAA-v1.0. You can withdraw it at any time by emailing [email protected].

We'll use these details to obtain your meter, supplier and consumption information and to contact you about it. We keep the authority record, with the date, time, IP address and browser, as proof of your permission. See our privacy policy for how we handle your data.

Here's how much carbon each unit of electricity in Wales is forecast to carry over the next 24 hours.

How the grid in Wales works

Wales has wind farms on its hills and off its north coast, solar across the south and west, and Pembroke, one of the biggest gas-fired power stations in Europe. When Pembroke's running hard, South Wales can carry some of the highest carbon in Britain while North Wales stays much cleaner.

That gap means two sites in Wales can see very different carbon at the same moment, so it's worth checking your own postcode rather than going by the figure for Wales as a whole.

    • Coal Aberthaw, the last coal power station in Wales, closed in 2020.
    • Nuclear Wylfa on Anglesey stopped generating in 2015, so Wales has no working nuclear station.
    • Storage Dinorwig, inside a mountain in Eryri (Snowdonia), is a pumped-storage hydro station that can reach full power within about a minute to steady the grid.

What it means for your business

Network charges are set region by region, and South Wales and North Wales sit in different regions. If you run sites in both, or across the border in England, the same contract can cost different amounts at each. We'll check that for you.

    Ready for half-hourly settlement?

Business electricity is moving to half-hourly settlement (MHHS), so when you use power is about to matter as much as how much. See what it means for your site.

Northern Ireland runs on a separate grid shared with Ireland, so its figures come from SONI, the grid operator there.

Live figures: the mix, carbon intensity and forecast for Wales, and each network region's, from the NESO Carbon Intensity API (CC BY 4.0). Regional figures are NESO's estimates of the electricity used in each region, including power flowing in from elsewhere, and are updated every half hour.
