Northern Ireland suppliers' fuel mix
Every electricity supplier in Northern Ireland has to tell you where its power came from. These are the Utility Regulator's published figures for 2024, cleanest first, against the all-island average.

How Northern Ireland's grid works
Northern Ireland's electricity runs on a different system from Britain's. It's part of the all-island grid with Ireland, so the figures on our Britain pages don't cover it.
Wind is the biggest home-grown source. On a windy day it can meet a large share of demand, and on a still one gas and the cables do most of the work, so carbon here can swing a lot from hour to hour.
- Grid SONI, the System Operator for Northern Ireland, runs the grid here. EirGrid runs it in Ireland.
- Market Northern Ireland and Ireland have shared one wholesale market, the Single Electricity Market, since 2007. Britain's market is separate.
- Links The Moyle interconnector runs under the North Channel to Ayrshire in Scotland, and the North-South tie-line joins Northern Ireland's grid to Ireland's.
- Figures SONI publishes wind, solar, demand and cable flows every 15 minutes, which is what you're seeing live on this page.
What it means for your business
Northern Ireland businesses buy power in the all-island market, so prices follow gas and wind there rather than in Britain. If you've got sites on both sides of the Irish Sea, we can look at them together and find you the right contracts for each.
