Business energy bill check

Every check on your bill, in one go

Our VAT checker, levy checker and savings calculator each look at one part of your bill. Send us the bill itself and we'll do all of them for you, and a few things a calculator can't. Upload it once, tell us who to reply to, and one of our team reads it through.

What we check on your bill

  • The VAT rate: we check if you're paying 20% VAT when you should pay less.
  • The Climate Change Levy: we check if you're paying the CCL when you don't owe it.
  • Your unit rates and standing charges: we compare your unit rate (the price for each kWh you use) and standing charge (a fixed daily charge) with prices from suitable suppliers for your sites, and negotiate with your current supplier too.
  • Mistakes on the bill: one of our team reads your bill through to spot any mistakes.
  • Your meter and usage details: with your Meter Information permission we get your meter, supplier and usage details from the industry, including your EAC (the kWh a year the industry expects your meter to use), so your quotes are based on what you really use.

Sending a water bill? Pick Water below and we'll check your rates and standing charges and look for mistakes.

Want us to ask your supplier too?

Your supplier holds more about your account than your bill shows. Tick the box for a supplier information form and we'll send you our Letter of Authority (LOA) to sign. It lets us ask your supplier about your contract for you, and we recommend it.

Our LOA lets us help you, not make decisions for you. Help with your contracts, bills and supplier queries: yes. Enter into a contract on your behalf: no. Some brokers ask for a "level 2" LOA that lets them sign contracts for you. Ours is a level 1 LOA, so only you can agree a contract.

A PDF, or a clear photo of every page. Nothing is sent until you press "Upload my bill securely".

What should we check?

A PDF, or a clear photo of every page. Up to 6 files, 10 MB each and 30 MB in all. PDF, JPG, PNG or HEIC.

    What happens next?

    • Your bill is kept safe: it comes to our team over a secure connection, is checked for viruses and is kept privately.
    • A person reads it: nothing is decided automatically. One of our team goes through the checks you ticked and gets in touch about what we find.
    • No commitment: the check is free, and nothing you send us signs you up to anything.

Other ways to send your bill

    • Email it to us: send it to your personal customer service agent, or to [email protected].
    • Post it to us: Black Sheep Utilities Limited, Telecom House, 125-135 Preston Road, Brighton, BN1 6AF.

Words we use on this page

    VAT (value added tax)
A tax on most goods and services, energy included. On business energy it's 20%, 5% or 0%, depending on how much you use and what you use it for. Source: GOV.UK, VAT rates
    CCL (Climate Change Levy)
A tax on the electricity and gas businesses use, charged per kWh and shown on your bill. From 1 April 2026 it's 0.801p per kWh, and 0.827p from 1 April 2027. Homes, a charity's non-business use and small supplies don't pay it. Source: HMRC, Climate Change Levy rates
    Unit rate
The price you pay for each unit of energy you use, in pence per kWh. Your bill multiplies it by the kWh you used, so a lower rate saves you money on every unit. Source: Ofgem, energy price cap and standing charges explained
    Standing charge
A fixed charge you pay every day for each meter, even on a day you don't use any energy. It covers costs that don't change with how much you use. Source: Ofgem, standing charges explained
    EAC (Estimated Annual Consumption)
The electricity industry's estimate of how many kWh your meter uses in a year, used in settlement until real readings replace it. It's often on your bill or contract. Source: Elexon glossary, estimated annual consumption
Meter Information permission (Meter Information and Data Access Authority)
Your permission for us to get your meter, supplier and usage details so we can work out your quotes. It doesn't put you into a contract or commit you to a quote, and there's no fee for it. It lasts 12 months unless you tell us to stop sooner.
    LOA (Letter of Authority)
A document you sign that lets us act for you, including talking to your current supplier and other suppliers and getting your meter information. Ours is a level 1 LOA: it lets us help with your contracts, bills and supplier queries, but not enter into a contract on your behalf. Only you can agree a contract.
